Physical Education

Updated: May 2026

Physical Education at our school is designed to inspire a lifelong love of sport and physical activity. We ensure that every child has access to at least 60 minutes of physical activity twice a week, while covering all aspects of the National Curriculum. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced, ambitious for all learners, and removes barriers to achievement so that every child can set and reach their goals.

We are committed to developing children who flourish physically, emotionally and socially. Through a broad, balanced and progressive PE programme tailored to individual needs, pupils build motivation, confidence, physical competence, and a strong understanding of the importance of leading an active lifestyle—both during their time at Mosspits and beyond.

Sporting values are central to our school ethos. We promote positive attitudes towards physical, social and mental wellbeing through lessons, extra-curricular activities and competitive opportunities. Pupils benefit from a wide range of activities before and after school, alongside regular participation in external competitions and strong links with local sports clubs to strengthen community connections.

We actively monitor participation to ensure equal access for all pupils, including those eligible for Pupil Premium and those with special educational needs or disabilities.

Our vision is for all children to leave Mosspits as well-rounded individuals—confident, resilient and independent—equipped to take responsibility for their own health and fitness throughout life.

The Daily Mile
All children take part in the Daily Mile using our purpose-built cross-country track. Eleven laps equal one mile, and pupils run or jog at their own pace for 15 minutes each day. This inclusive, non-competitive activity encourages fitness, social interaction and wellbeing. Children participate in their school uniform, making it easy to fit into the day, and return to class refreshed and ready to learn.

Swimming
We provide swimming lessons for Key Stage 2 pupils at Liverpool Aquatics Centre. Our current programme is:

  • Autumn Term: Year 4
  • Spring Term: Year 5
  • Summer Term 2: Year 6 (top-up programme)

Year 6 pupils who have not yet met the National Curriculum swimming requirements are offered additional support through a dedicated top-up programme.
