PE and Sport

Physical Education

PE helps our children to foster a love for physical education and sport. We aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to access at least 60 minutes of physical activity twice a week. We cover all aspects of the PE national curriculum. We aim to remove any ceilings to goal setting and we ensure that our curriculum is logically mapped out whilst remaining ambitious for all pupils. We want children to grow up and shine physically, emotionally and socially.

We believe through experiences and a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum tailored to all children, they will have the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for their engagement in physical activity, sport and PE throughout their life at Mosspits and beyond.

We champion sporting values that intertwine with the school ethos. This help our children to maintain a positive physical, social and mental outlook. This is embedded into all lessons, extra-curricular opportunities and competitions.

We provide a plethora of physical activities before, during and after school as well as attending weekly out of school competitions, and we have a strong track record of linking our school with outside clubs in order to bridge community links.

Attendance and allocation of clubs is monitored to ensure equality of opportunity for all children to take part in enrichment activities, including pupils entitled to Pupil Premium and those that have a special educational need or disability.

Our vision is for children to leave Mosspits as well rounded individuals physically, socially and mentally as well as growing to become confident, resilient and independent; able to take responsibility for their health and fitness throughout their life.

Daily Mile

Our children take part in a Daily Mile. We have a purpose-made cross country track on the playground for the children to complete their daily mile. 11 laps of the track is the same as running 1 mile.

The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends.

  • It takes place in 15 minutes, with most children aspiring to complete the mile, or more, in the time given each day.
  • Children run outside in the fresh air – and the weather is a benefit, not a barrier.
  • Children run in their uniforms so no kit or changing time is needed.
  • It’s social, non-competitive and fun.
  • The children return to class ready to learn.
  • It helps to improve fitness.
  • It encourages children to be aware of their health.
  • It’s fully inclusive; every child, whatever their circumstances, age or ability, succeeds at The Daily Mile.

Swimming

We offer swimming sessions to our Key Stage 2 children. These swimming sessions

take place in Liverpool Aquatics Centre.

This year (2022-2023) our swimming curriculum looks like this:

Autumn: Year 4

Spring: Year 5

Summer 1: Year 6

Summer 2: Year 6 (Top up programme)

Year 6 children have the opportunity to attend a swimming top-up programme in July.

Top-up swimming lessons in Year 6 provide extra support to those pupils who have

not met the three national curriculum requirements.
